Mark Zuckerberg was made Time's 2010 Person of the Year.

In the words of internet entrepeneur and Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, "'I'm trying to make the world a more open place by helping people connect and share." What started in Zuckerberg's college dorm room in 2004, has developed into a global phenomenon, with over five hundred and fifty million members. According to Lev Grossman of Time Magazine , "if Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest, behind only China and India." An instant hit, Facebook has changed the course of technology and history.

One of four children, Mark Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984. Intrigued by computers at an early age, he was recognized as a computer prodigy by his parents, who employed David Newman to tutor Zuckerberg on computers and sent him to Mercy College. Zuckerberg also studied at Phillips Exeter Academy before enrolling at Harvard University where he developed facebook's predececessor, "Thefacebook." He had already developed "Zucknet" (for household communication) "Synapse" (an early version of Pandora) "CourseMatch," and "Facemash."

Three of Zuckerberg's piers- Divya Narenda, and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss- recruited him to help with their undeveloped social network called "Harvard Connection," which he agreed too. However, Zuckerberg quit the project to establish his own social network along with Dustin Moskavitz, Chris Hughes, and Eduardo Saverin. This site included personal profiling, photo uploading, and online communication, before recieving a 12.7 million dollar investment by Accel Partners in 2005. By the end of that year, his site had over 5.5 million users.

Having dropped out of Harvard sophmore year to fully devote himself to "TheFacebook," while not selling out to various companies, Zuckerberg hit an obstacle as lawsuits were filed against him. Feeling misportrayed, Zuckerberg also became discontent with the 2009, unapproved biography, by Ben's Mazrich, titled Accidental Billionares. Subsequently, the book became the basis for the Academy Award nominated movie "The Social Network " starring Jessie Eisenberg.

Facebook has changed how individuals communicate, allowing for en masse instant communication over the internet regardless of distance. Thus, individuals no longer soley rely on direct contact and contact via phone, email, or letters. Information can be dispersed, received, and controlled without television, radio or newspaper involvement. As recently exemplified in Egypt, Facebook can even serve as a vehicle for revolution. Only time will tell Facebook's further future impact on the world.
